Arbroath 1 – 2 Queen’s Park Highlights

Dick Campbell Interview

Scott Allan Interview

Arbroath suffered their first defeat in the Scottish Championship at Gayfield since the opening day of last season this afternoon as Queen’s Park came out on top 2-1.

Arbroath brought back in Bobby Linn and Luke Donnelly, with David Gold sidelined by injury and Mason Hancock dropping to the bench. Attacking midfielder Daniel Fosu was again asked to play up front whilst Scott Allan was named on the bench.

With a howling wind blowing through Gayfield, Queen’s Park attacked the Harbour End in the first half with the wind at their backs.

The visitors definitely had the bulk of early possession and opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Derek Gaston parried a shot by Simon Murray only for the ball to hit off Thomas O’Brien and into the back of the net.

In the 20th minute Queen’s Park had a great chance to double their lead, but as Arbroath countered it was their best move and closest they had come.

Derek Gaston made a stunning save to deny Jack Thomson who raced passed two Arbroath defenders before unleashing a low drive.

Queen’s Park had a lucky escape after a handball in the Queen’s Park penalty box in the 33rd minute.

Just 3 minutes later Gaston made another great save, repeating the feat just 2 minutes before the break.

Arbroath made a much better start to the second half winning two corners in the opening two minutes but again had to be alert as Simon Murray created a chance in the 49th minute.

Scott Stewart headed win from a Michael McKenna cross in the 51st minute before Bobby Linn curled one just over on the hour mark.

Calum Ferrie made a finger tip save to deny Bobby Linn from a free kick in the 67th minute.

Scott Allan, Deri Corfe, Dale Hilson and Kieran Shanks came on for Bobby Linn, Luke Donnelly, Scott Stewart and Daniel Fosu.

Queen’s Park hit Arbroath on the break and Grant Savoury crosses for Scott Williamson who netted from close range in the 74th minute.

Mason Hancock replaced Michael McKenna in the 75th minute, and just 3 minutes later Arbroath pulled one back.

A lapse in the Spider’s defence let Shanks intercept and as his first shot came off the post, he made no mistake bundling the ball over the line the second time under pressure from Ferrie.

On the stroke of full time, Ferrie denied Shanks an equaliser as he made a finger tip save from a low drive, and then denying him again just 3 minutes later.
