Why Football Matters

Why Football Matters
We received a very kind reply from Arbroath fan Marion Duthie who we informed on Saturday evening that she had won a season ticket in our “Virtual Grand National” on Saturday.
Marion replied with a beautiful story when she recently bought a brick on our supporters wall on our Champions Lounge, and well we hope Marion doesn’t mind but we felt it was worth sharing with our Lichtie family.
When asked what date Marion wanted on her brick, she replied with “Forever”
“Our family routine on a Saturday from the mid-late 1960’s was to leave our home in Brechin, drop Mum off at Granny’s house in Elmfield Avenue and Dad, my brother and I would go to Gayfield.
Granny disapproved of this as “Wee girls shouldn’t go to football matches.”
I am very grateful my parents ignored this advice.
These were the days of the forward line of Sellars, Cant Jack, Bruce and Wilkie and although I cannot recall my very first game I have vivid memories of “Congratulations” blasting over the tannoys when we were promoted.
I read in Fraser Clyne’s book that the 52nd anniversary of that day is coming up in a few days!!
I have supported the Lichties through thick and (very) thin times since then and my only regret is that Dad, who passed away 13 years ago today, did not see the golden decade we are enjoying.
It is with great pride I can say that “I was there” for all three championship clinching matches although I have to admit “Helicopter Saturday” was almost too much to bear.
I very much look forward to returning to Gayfield when this hellish time is over and seeing you at hospitality sometime in the future with Charlie Strachan and Neil Hemings in tow!
May I conclude by thanking Mike and the Board of directors,
Dick and the playing and coaching staff, Louise and the other non football staff for all your efforts in keeping the club going through these unprecedented times.
Keep Safe.
Kind Regards
Marion B Duthie
P.S. Craig Knowles had a lucky escape that “Any Second Now” didn’t finish 5th as he would have had an impossible task trying to sort my golf swing out in 30 minutes!!!”
Congratulations and thank you Marion!
We do hope to see you and all our Lichties back very soon!
