Dundee United vs Arbroath – Match Preview

The Lichties return to competitive action tomorrow as they make the short trip down the A92 to Dundee to take on United at Tannadice in the opening game of the 2018 / 2019 season.

The two sides faced each other in the same competition at Gayfield at the start of the 2016 / 2017 season which resulted in a 1-1 draw, with both goals coming in the last 5 minutes.

However the Lichties lost out on the bonus point as Cammy Bell saved a Liam Callaghan penalty kick.

You have to go back a looooooooooooong time for the Lichties last game at Tannadice.

The last fixture was a Forfarshire Cup game on Saturday 30th July 1983 which United won 2-0 in front of a crowd of 3,339 inside Tannadice.

There hasn’t been quite the same transfer activity over the summer at Gayfield as Dick and Ian Campbell have been able to keep the core of our team together who have been so successful over the last 2 seasons.

There will still be more additions to the squad but it is important we bring in the right type of player to enhance the squad.

New additions Darren Hill, Darren Jamieson and Jason Thomson have all enjoyed game time in pre-season and they will all be looking forward to tomorrow.

Betfred Cup Rules;

Clubs are awarded the usual three points for a win but all drawn games in the group stage go straight to penalties – the shoot-out winners receive a bonus point. ie three points for a win, two points for a shoot-out win and one point for losing on penalties.

If clubs are level on points at the end of the group stage the criteria for separating them is 1) goal difference, 2) goals scored, 3) away goals scored, 4) matches won, 5) away matches won, 6) drawing of lots.

The eight group winners go through with the four best runner-ups also progressing into the second round.

No Trialists are allowed in the Betfred Cup, only signed players.
