Arbroath 1 – 4 Edinburgh City

Arbroath’s run of 13 games undefeated came to a crashing halt this evening as an uncharacteristic display seen League Two Leaders Edinburgh City record their 10th win a row.

Arbroath made 4 changes with Darren Hill, David Gold, Finn Graham and Ryan McCord starting with Darren Jamieson, Mark Whatley, Bobby Linn and Gavin Swankie all dropping to the bench.

The Lichties made the dream start in the 11th minute when Michael McKenna beat the offside trap to latch on to a Colin Hamilton pass and hit a low drive under Callum Antell to open the scoring.

However Edinburgh City were given a chance to get back into the game when Colin Hamilton fouled Blair Henderson in the 24th minute as referee Alan Muir pointed to the spot.

Blair Henderson made no mistake and scored his 14th goal of the season with Colin Hamilton getting a yellow card for his troubles.

Edinburgh City seemed to spark into the life and Arbroath’s normal flowing football just wasn’t happening but Michael McKenna came close just 4 minutes before the break.

Half Time – Arbroath 1 – 1 Edinburgh City

Edinburgh City’s Danny Handling had to be substituted in the 55th minute and 60 seconds later Edinburgh City had taken the lead. A pass down the wing was cut back to Henderson who shot at goal but his strike became a pass with Scott Shepherd diverting the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-1

Arbroath brought on Mark Whatley and Bobby Linn for Finn Graham and Danny Denholm after 64 minutes but only 4 minutes later and City had another penalty.

Michael McKenna was adjudged to have caught Shepherd even though the BBC ALBA instant replays show the foul to be outside of the Arbroath box, but Referee Muir pointed to the spot and again Henderson hit the back of the net to make it 3-1 after 68 minutes.

Perhaps the highlight for Arbroath was the welcome return of Steven Doris who came off the bench to replace Ryan Wallace for his first appearance in an Arbroath shirt since 9th September 2016.

Arbroath’s misery was complete when Liam Henderson added a 4th for City from close range as he connected to a Craig Thomson corner.

It wasn’t the normal high tempo fluid Arbroath performance we have grown to become used too but credit must go to Edinburgh City who make it 10 mins in a row and have only conceded 3 goals in the league all season.

We shall group again and know that a better performance is required as we welcome Dumbarton to Gayfield next Saturday as we look to extend our 4 point lead at the top of League One.

C’mon the Lichties.
