1946-1947 Scottish Cup

It was brought to our attention that Arbroath reached the Scottish Cup Semi-finals 73 years ago this week!

Not only that but we heard that father of Ewan Vannett who now lives down in Norfolk was at the game. His father was born in Friockheim in 1930 but moved to England in 1966.

In the first round we were held to a 2-2 draw by Stenhousemuir at Gayfield before wining the replay 2-0, then defeated Raith Rovers 5-4 at Gayfield in the 3rd round before beating Heart of Midlothian 2-1 at Gayfield in the quarter finals.

It seems like there were only 2 ties in the 2nd round?

The semi-final was played on 12th April 1947 at Dens Park and Arbroath were defeated by Aberdeen 2-0 in front of a crowd of 22,000 with South African Striker Stan Williams netting in the 43rd and 70th minute.

The Lichties played in a hooped shirt that day.
