Arbroath 1 – 1 Alloa Athletic – Match Summary

Match Day 08 – Ladbrokes League 1 – Season 2017 / 2018

Saturday 30th September 2017, Gayfield Park, Arbroath, 3.00pm kick off.

The Lichties were held to a draw today at Gayfield by Alloa Athletic. The Wasps had done their home work and played two strong lines of defence and midfield nullifying any space for the Lichties to really break them down.

It could have been an uphill battle for the Lichties after Colin Hamilton conceded a penalty after 17 minutes but David Hutton first saved the spot kick from Scott Taggart then recovered to make an even more impressive save from Kris Renton who followed up from the rebound.

However Hutton’s luck ran out in the 35th minute when he couldn’t quite hold a Flannigan cross which bounced off the post then rebounded off David Gold and then rolled into the net. Gold was unfortunate to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and didn’t have enough time to move his body as it all happened in an instant.

Arbroath definitely had a better start to the second half and got back into the game in the 56th minute after Danny Denholm was taken out in the box by Jon Robertson.

It seemed to be the only officiating decision the Lichties got all afternoon in a game marred by inconsistencies by the officials which also prevented any natural flow from the game.

Ryan McCord stepped up to score his 6th league goal in 3 matches to pull the Lichties level.

The Lichties almost scored a second goal after Neil Parry let a shot slide under his body but it was cleared off the line by Daryll Meggatt despite protests by the home fans.

David Hutton again kept the Lichties in the game with another fantastic double save with Danny Denholm almost squeezing the ball in the near post but Parry was able to scramble over to tip the ball round the post for a corner.

The Lichties definitely were on top for the final minutes but couldn’t find a way past Parry and his defence.

A draw was a fair result to a well organised Alloa Athletic team who looked dangerous on the break and hard to break down at the back.

C’mon the Lichties
