Remembering Walter Cameron – 1942-2021

The thoughts of everyone at Arbroath FC are with the family of Arbroath legend Walter Cameron, who sadly passed away last week.

Walter, a right back, played more than 200 games for Arbroath in the 1960’s and was a key member of Bert Henderson’s team which won promotion to the First Division (the top tier at the time).

Hailing from Alloa, it was Falkirk who Walter made his debut for but also played for Gairdoch United and won the Lord Weir Cup in 1958 / 59.

From 1961 to 1969 Walter played for the Lichties whilst also being a draughtsman in Dunfermline and spend the bulk of his career playing at Gayfield who won his heart.

In January 1967 Arbroath lost 4-0 to Celtic at Parkhead in the Scottish Cup and Walter was Man of the Match.

This was the Celtic side which win the European Cup a few months later!

Club Historian Fraser Clyne was kindly sent these photographs by Walter’s younger brother, Rob Cameron.

We are sure there are many of our supporters who remember Walter with fond memories.

Our thoughts are with Walter’s family and friends. Walter is survived by his sons Ewan and Brian and widow Mrs Dorothy Cameron.

Rest in Peace Walter.
