Hamilton Academical 1 – 1 Arbroath

A 91st minute header by Captain Thomas O’Brien gave Arbroath a deserved point on Saturday afternoon at New Douglas Park.

Hamilton had taken the lead in the 16th minute from the penalty spot as Andy Ryan converted after he himself was adjudged to have been fouled by Colin Hamilton, but given by the reaction of the entire Arbroath team it seemed like it was a controversial decision.

Arbroath dominated the match, especially the second half where they lay siege to the Hamilton goal but it just wasn’t to be their afternoon.

A series of first half chances weren’t converted with Anton Dowds and Luke Donnelly both coming close with headers before Anton Dowds pulled a shot wide.

A crazy 20 seconds in the first half seen an Anton Dowds shot cleared off the line before Hamilton broke and Derek Gaston made a brilliant save to deny David Moyo.

Into the second half and with the wind at their backs it was wave after attack from the Lichties but they just couldn’t get the needed goal.

Hamilton were looking to hold on to their lead and the referee certainly could have played an extra 10-15 minutes of added on time given how many times play was interrupted or delayed by the home side.

In the end the Lichties got the goal they richly deserved with Thomas O’Brien thumping in a header from a James Craigen cross in the 91st minute.

With time still on the clock Arbroath sought the winner but as close as they came it just wasn’t their day.
