Arbroath 2 – 0 Queen of the South
The Lichties moved up to 4th place in the Scottish Championship this afternoon with a 2-0 win over Queen of the South.
A David Gold header from a Jason Thomson cross in the 6th minute found the back of the net, before Dale Hilson scored his first Arbroath goal in the 35th minute after a great move and cut back by Gavin Swankie.
The game went ahead after Referee Steven Reid was happy with conditions and 801 supporters braved the elements although the conditions were much better after kick off.
Stephen Dobbie was always a threat and had shots in the 8th minute and 11th minute as the Doonhammers tried to get back into the game.
Lee Kilday hit the post for Queen of the South from a flicked header in the 12th minute.
Craig Wighton was relentless in his pursuit to get forward and get the ball into the box as he battled the two Queen of the South Central Defenders.
Dale Hilson could have added to his tally in the 42nd minute but his header was just wide.
Mark Whatley’s flicked header in the 1st minute of the second half almost snuck in but was cleared away from the post.
Dale Hilson continued to impress and had a shot saved in the 51st minute with James Craigen coming on 4 minutes later to replace David Gold who took unwell.
Gavin Swankie showed his class and skill throughout the game before being replaced by Scott Stewart in the 70th minute.
Derek Gaston made a fantastic save as a Jack Hamilton shot took a wicked deflection in the 76th minute.
Arbroath had to survive Queen of the South’s best spell, but the Lichties were soon back looking for a 3rd and Craig Wighton should have made it 3-0 but pulled his shot wide.
Our back four were again outstanding helping keep a clean sheet, with Miko Virtanen again shining in midfield.
Mark Whatley who again worked tirelessly chasing the ball and intercepting passes throughout the afternoon was replaced by James Murphy in the 85th minute.
Arbroath claimed their 10th win in 24 games and again as a team impressed with their workrate and spirit throughout.

C’mon the Lichties!
