Local Survivor Hangs Up His Boots After 50 Years

Arbroath Football Club Would like to add our congratulations and best wishes to BOB FAIRWEATHER who will be 65 on 30th January and is taking retirement from his job in the construction industry. Having worked continuously from the age of 15 until his retirement yesterday, Bob plans to put his feet up for a while and get those odd jobs about the house done, before settling into a new routine.

Known to his friends and colleagues as a true survivor who is never shy to tell you how it is, his patriotic stance has featured throughout his life.

Bob was born in Arbroath and lived at 56 St Vigeans Road. He attended Inverbrothock Primary School across the street. He left school at 15 to work for local tomato grower in Arbroath before moving on to his chosen trade as an apprentice joiner with Arbirlot Joinery

After getting his HND he moved into the building industry which took him to Glasgow in the mid 1960s. Always on the look out for better opportunities Bob was on the move again 10 years later when he relocated to Edinburgh. While in Edinburgh he attracted his wife Margaret while sporting his Alan Rough perm, they married in 1984 and still live in Edinburgh today just round the corner from his first flat.

Bob will be in his usual place today, along with his friend since school John McMillan and they will be hoping for a better outcome than last Saturday. Bob was held up by road conditions on the way to Dumbarton and didn’t get into the ground until half time. But undeterred, he settled down to watch the second half only for the match to be abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch.

Hopefully we can kick start your celebrations in style this afternoon Bob.
