John McGlashan had recovered from this throat infection to take over from Jim Mercer in midfield. Jim was on the bench as was young Gavin Swankie. Arbroath had an early chance with a free header in a poor game but it was the home team who took the lead when George Rowe pulled down Mark Yardley at the edge of the box and Baltacha’s half hit free kick bounced off Hinchie’s far post and into the goal. The Lichties 4-5-1 formation was not allowing an open game and play was getting bogged down in the middle of the park.
in the second half the home team looked lackluster but Arbroath were not causing them any problems. The home team gradually got the upper hand and had a shot, which deflected off a defender and Hinchcliffe had to make an excellent diving save to turn the ball past the post, then an excellent run ended with a clumsy challenge from Florence outside the box however the ensuing free kick was weak, coming off of our wall into Hinchcliffe’s arms. The late introduction of Swankie livened up our attack and on the final whistle a Swankie cross saw all the Arbroath players appeal for a handball, but we got no reward.
