John Brownlie brought in Jim Gardner for Paul Brownlie who was laid low with the flu with John Cusick returned from food poisoning to take a place on the bench alongside Jim Mercer, John McAulay, David Arbuckle and Craig Wight. It was the visitors who started off the game on the offensive and had they taken their chances they could have been three up within the first 25 minutes. Arbroath got back into the game and took the lead in 36 minutes when young Gavin Swankie got to the by-line and sent over a cross which Andy Cargill, met however his shot was blocked however the ball broke to Bayne, whose effort was cleared off the line as far as McKinnon, whose effort broke to John McGlashan who slotted home the opener.

The second half saw Raith awarded a penalty in 61 minutes when Geordie Rowe was adjudged to have fouled Andy Smith in the home penalty box. Dunfermline target,  Novo, made no mistake from the spot, beating Hinchcliffe to his right. Arbroath then took control of the game and Bayne shot past, McKinnon went for a Cargill cross when Mercer was better placed and Cargill saw am effort from the right turned round the post by the Raith keeper. The game ended with the home team on top in what was Arbroath's first draw of the season.
