Following the postponement of the scheduled Third Round match on Saturday due to Gayfield being frost bound, the pitch was in a playable state to get the game played on the rescheduled date. With Andy Cargill being suspended, John Brownlie reverted back to a 4-5-1 formation with Kevin Heenan, David McInally and John Cusick coming in to replace Andy with Stevie Mallan being on the bench and Paul Brownlie dropping out of the squad. McInally had Arbroath's best chance midway through the first half but the visitors scored before half time with a spectacular free kick following a Tait foul.
Early in the second half, Pail Ritchie scored Inverness's second goal and the introduction of Mallan, Swankie and McAulay could not turn around the game for Arbroath. Inverness had a chance to kill of the game but Hinchcliffe blocked Bavidge's effort.
