Arbroath started on a more positive note against Falkirk but some slack play allowed the home team to take the lead after 10 minutes. Nine minutes later some delightful Arbroath passing play culminated with Heenan flighting a ball over to Brownlie on the right who equalised. Ten minutes later Falkirk took the lead again. Cusick was replaced by McAulay at half time with McKinnon moving into the centre of defence with Mackay. McInally was adjudged to have brought a player down in the penalty box after 59 minutes and Falkirk scored from the spot. Five minutes later Falkirk got their fourth goal but Arbroath continued to play football and could have pulled a goal back towards the end of the match. Bayne made his debut coming on for Mallan during the second half.
