With Stevie Florence and Kevin Heenan out injured, David McInally was again at left back and young Gavin Swankie came in for his first start in the First Division on the right wing with Paul Brownlie continuing on the left. The only goal of the game came after 25 minutes when Andy Cargill beat two defenders before knocking the ball past the home goalkeeper, Craig Nelson. Arbroath could have extended their lead on several occasions but Nelson pulled off a series of saves, including one brilliant stop to deny Gavin Swankie.

Arbroath continued to dominate and Swankie almost doubled their advantage with a blocked effort after 56 minutes. Mercer replaced Swankie after 74 minutes. Craig McEwan hit the post as Ayr searched for an equaliser and Paul Sheerin also went close, but Arbroath held out to end their six-game losing streak away from home.
