How did he save that?

Arbroath striker Greig Spence won a foul in injury time at the end of the first half allowing Bobby Linn to try his luck for 20 yards out.

The home crowd were ready to celebrate as the ball looked to be heading in but former Truro City keeper and current Elgin City number one, Tom McHale made this stunning save.

Arbroath 2 - 1 Elgin City

A goal deep in injury time by Steven Doris got the Lichties off to a perfect start in the Betfred Cup yesterday at Gayfield.

Arbroath vs Elgin City - Match Preview

Betfred Cup - Group C - Game 1 - Season 2019 / 2020

Saturday 13th July 2019, Gayfield Park, Arbroath, 3.00pm kick off

Arbroath return to competitive action today as we welcome Elgin City to Gayfield.

The Ladbrokes League 2 side are full of familiar faces with former striker Kane Hester and assistant Manager Keith Gibson who won the 3rd Division with the Lichties.

The sides met twice last season, once in this same fixture then in the Irn-Bru Cup where the Lichties claimed victory via a penalty shoot out.

Elgin City have strengthened over the summer with the signings of Andy McDonald (Stranraer), Euan Spark (Brechin City), Russell Dingwall (Ross County), Rory MacEwan (Stirling University), Conor O'Keefe (Stranraer) and returning striker Shane Sutherland from Peterhead.

Arbroath look to be without Scott Stewart and Luke Donnelly who are both nursing knocks and with no trialists allowed to play in the Betfred Cup it will be another tough start for both sides.

We hope you will get right behind the team from the start and C’mon the Lichties!

Happy Birthday to Tracy Cameron!

Everyone at Arbroath FC would like to wish Tracy a very Happy 80th Birthday!

Tracy joined the club last year and is a pivotal member our backroom staff making Gayfield run on a daily basis.

Unfortunately Tracy is currently recuperating from an operation and we have been without her smile for a couple of weeks now and we miss her!

Not only does her smile and bad singing get us through the day but she also does a power of work behind the scenes and we are very grateful to have her at the club.

Happy Birthday and get well soon TC!

Mark goes into his 6th season with the Lichties and has now lifted both the Ladbrokes League 1 and 2 Trophies as Arbroath Captain.

Mark alongside Ricky Little, Bobby Linn and David Gold are the 4 players who have been at Gayfield since Dick and Ian Campbell took charge of the club back in March 2016.

We hope Mark enjoys celebrates his birthday in style and has another great season with the Lichties!

Volunteer Videographer Wanted

Arbroath Football Club are seeking a motived volunteer videographer to join the club and as we look forward to playing our football in Scotland’s second tier, the Ladbrokes Championship.

As everyone knows our videographer Neil Douglas is stepping down from the Gantry to focus on making a full recovery and we know we have very very big shoes to fill!

The main responsibilities of the videographer include, capturing the action of a live match day and editing it down to a 8-12 minute highlight package which can be used on the club’s website and official social media - Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

As well as having your work shared on the official Arbroath channels and the SPFL channel there is always the chance that a unique moment during a game will end up with the clip being shown on "A View from the Terrace" or one of the national news channels.

You will be given admission to Gayfield and all away stadia as part of the Arbroath FC media team and will have access to the Arbroath playing squad and management team on match days for interviews.

Ideally candidates will have a knowledge of an editing suite - Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Davinci Resolve, iMovie etc to cut the highlights down into a highlight package and have a suitable camera which can be used capture the action.

There is the chance for the candidate to put their own stamp of identity on how things are presented and we appreciate those those who think out of the box and have their own ideas to apply.

We fully appreciate that we are looking for someone who is a highly skilled individual and who can take on the position as a volunteer.

This is a big ask in any walk of life but as a part-time football club we wouldn’t be where we are without our volunteers as part of our football team.

We have been very fortunate in the past with Neil and our previous videographers but if you are passionate about football and this appeals we would love to hear from you.

Please send a brief introduction, an example of your work (Youtube, Vimeo links) and your contact details to arbroathfc@outlook.com.

Thank you

Betfred Group C Fixture Details

Competitive football returns to Gayfield on Saturday as we welcome Elgin City for the first game in this season's Betfred Cup.

Along with Hibernian, Alloa Athletic, Stirling Albion and Elgin City we are part of Group C with 4 games to be played - 2 at home and 2 away.

Format
The group stage involves 40 clubs - the 38 SPFL teams at the end of 2018/19 who did not qualify for Europe plus Cove Rangers (Highland League champions) and East Kilbride (Lowland League champions), drawn into eight groups of five - split into four north groups and four south groups. Each group contains one seeded club, one second seed and three unseeded clubs.

Group matches
Clubs are awarded the usual three points for a win but all drawn games in the group stage go straight to penalties - the shoot-out winners receive a bonus point. ie three points for a win, two points for a shoot-out win and one point for losing on penalties.

If clubs are level on points at the end of the group stage the criteria for separating them is 1) goal difference, 2) goals scored, 3) away goals scored, 4) matches won, 5) away matches won, 6) drawing of lots.

Knock-out rounds
The eight group winners and four best runners-up progress to the second round, where they are joined by the four clubs competing in Europe - Celtic, Rangers, Kilmarnock and Aberdeen.

The seeded teams in the last 16 are the four European clubs and the four group winners with the best records.

The tournament reverts to a traditional knock-out format from the second round onwards, with ties decided by extra time and penalties if the scores are level after 90 minutes.

GoPro Goal - Gavin Ritchie

19-year-old Gavin Ritchie, who came on as a trialist for the second half scored our second goal in the 80th minute as his 20 yard drive was deflected in the net by Liam Callaghan.

It was the second appearance for the former Dundee United right back who also made a second half appearance against Celtic XI on Sunday.

Montrose 3 - 2 Arbroath

Arbroath suffered their first pre-season defeat tonight at Links Park in a fiery Angus Derby.

Arbroath Manager Dick Campbell made several changes from Sunday with Gaston in goal, then from Right to left, Brian, Wilson, Thomson and Hamilton in defence then Kader, Whatley, Gold and Linn in midfield with McKenna and Swankie up front.

Scott Stewart and Luke Donnelly watched on from the stands as they both nursed knocks.

Montrose seemed up for the game from the first kick and Andrew Steeves opened the scoring in the 27th minute heading in a cross from Sean Dillion. Arbroath almost equalised straight away with Allan Fleming denying Michael McKenna but Montrose added their second in the 32nd minute when Josh Skelly’s mishit shot fell to Graham Webster who couldn’t miss at the back post.

Arbroath introduced Thomas O’Brien, Greig Spence, Steven Doris and trialist James Murphy at the break but Montrose substitute Lewis Milne made it 3-0 in the 66th minute as Montrose looked to have secured the win.

Trialists Jamie McKenzie and Gavin Ritchie came on for Omar Kader and Gavin Swankie in the 67th minute.

Spence and Doris soon began to really harass the Montrose defence and Arbroath pulled a goal back in the 78th minute when Colin Hamilton nodded in a Bobby Linn cross.

A minute later and Arbroath pulled another goal back, this time it was Gavin Ritchie who hit a low drive from 18 yards which sailed past Fleming for a frantic last 11 minutes.

The tackles had been flying in all throughout the game and they seemed to intensify in the final 10 minutes.

Montrose striker Russel McLean and James Murphy suffered a nasty clash of heads with Murphy having to get heavily bandaged with McLean forced off.

There was no more goals as the Lichties went down to their first defeat of the pre-season.

The real stuff starts on Saturday as we welcome Elgin City to Gayfield in our first Betfred Cup game.
