Arbroath 2 East Stirlingshire 0
Gavin Swankie shot the Lichties into the lead after 27th minutes with his first goal since returning to Gayfield from St Johnstone in the summer.
His goal came just a minute after the visitors had a strong penalty claim turned down when Josh Falkingham seemed to handle on the line.
The former Leeds United youngster shrugged that scare aside by setting up Swankie who raced through the centre of the Shire defence before calmly slotting low past the goalkeeper.
Jim Hamilton came close to extending Arbroath’s lead shortly after the interval, but his shot was blocked and David
Dimilta agonisingly hit the rebound against the post.
Darren Hill, making his 100th league appearance in the Arbroath goal, pulled off a couple of important saves before David McGowan secured the points with nine minutes to go following a blunder by Michael Andrews.
The visiting goalkeeper’s attempted clearance was intercepted on the edge of the box by substitute Robbie Ross who set up McGowan for the easiest of chances.
Shire should have reduced the leeway a minute later when Jamie Stevenson was floored in the box by Stuart Malcolm, but Stephen McGuire fired the resultant spot kick high over the bar.

JIM WEIR – A STATISTICAL
RECORD
By Fraser Clyne
Jim
Weir was appointed manager of Arbroath on 1st November 2009,
three weeks after John McGlashan’s resignation. The former St Johnstone
captain set out to save the club from relegation, but failed to do so and at
the end of the season, after just 28 league games in charge, he resigned to
take up the helm at Brechin City. He was also in the hotseat for one
Scottish Cup tie, the infamous 1-0 loss to Ayrshire’s Irvine Meadow – the
first time a junior club has eliminated a league side from the competition.
Weir’s short spell in the post makes it difficult to compare his record with
the men who preceded him as Gayfield boss. The table below shows, however,
that he won a lower percentage of league matches (including play-offs) than
anyone since John Brownlie. It should, of course, be remembered that
Brownlie’s record included two seasons in the First Division. Weir’s teams
drew a higher percentage of games than any of his immediate predecessor’s.
Interestingly, he lost a lower percentage than any of the others. So, make
what you will of the stats!

Jordyn Sheerin hits his opener at Gayfield
The Lichties earned a thoroughly deserved 1-1 draw against Dundee at Gayfield.
Trialist Jordyn Sheerin put Arbroath up in the first half with a fine strike from the edge of the box, made all the better considering that he was shooting against a strong wind.
Dundee levelled in the second half when the ball was scrambled over the line, with Sean Higgins the most
likely to have touched it last.
Both sides had chances to increase their scores with McIlravey forcing a great save from Rab Douglas and Darren Hill in the Arbroath goal also making 2 fine stops.
There were many positive performances from the Lichties, with Stuart Malcolm impressive at centre back, David Di Malta on the wing and both Jordyn Sheerin and David McGowan up front worked hard all afternoon.
Sheerin and Falkingham player well together in the middle.

Arbroath FC snap up Josh
Falkingham

Paul Sheerin
has pulled off a major coup by landing highly regarded
former Leeds midfielder Josh Falkingham on a one-year
deal.
But Sheerin, who beat off
competition from Ayr United to land Falkingham, has
admitted the Lichties will do well to retain the
19-year-old's services for the duration of his contract
as he's too good for the third division.
