Irn-Bru Scottish Second Division Play-off Final - Second Leg
10th May 2008
Stranraer 1-0 Arbroath (1-2)
Arbroath were the ones celebrating at Stair Park
Ten-man Arbroath held on for an aggregate win over Stranraer to win promotion to Division Two despite losing by a goal at Stair Park.
Arbroath's hopes were hampered by the red card shown to defender Craig Tully for a rash challenge after 58 minutes.
Gregory Tade gave Stranraer victory on the day, drilling the ball home from 12 yards five minutes later.
But Stranraer, who had finished second top and 13 points ahead of Arbroath, could not force an equaliser.
The Stair Park outfit could, however, still win promotion should Gretna go out of business after their relegation from the Scottish Premier League.

Robbie Raeside's extra-time winner relegated Cowdenbeath to Division Three and put Arbroath into a promotion play-off final against Stranraer.

But the home side's lead only lasted 12 minutes, Roddy Black glanced in the equaliser for the Third Division side.
Veteran defender Raeside headed home after 115 minutes to secure victory.

Everyone associated with Arbroath Football Club were saddened to hear of the passing away of Albert Henderson on Wednesday lunchtime. Albert will be remembered as one of the longest serving managers in professional football, during an era that many view as a golden age for Scottish Football and Arbroath FC, spanning 18 years. During his reign, which began in 1962, Arbroath were promoted on 2 occasions and enjoyed top flight football for 4 seasons. Older Lichties supporters can recall many memorable matches during this time and particularly the 3-2 win over Rangers at Ibrox in 1974.
Arbroath FC chairman John Christison said, “I’m sure the thoughts of everyone associated with the club are with Doreen and Carol in their loss. “Bert occupies a huge place in the club’s history and he had maintained his links with Gayfield and was always a very welcome visitor here. “When he was able he would attend club dinners and other events and, in the affection he had for Arbroath FC, he was always an absolute gentleman.”
Club Secretary, Gary Callon, spoke of the huge respect that Bert still held across the whole of Scottish Football. "When I first became involved with Arbroath and started visiting away teams across the country, one of the first things I realised was how well known and respected Bert was in my conversations with other Directors and supporters. There would always be someone asking how he was and recalling memorable matches he had been involved in. I particularly remember speaking to Arthur Montford one day about him".

Lichties to get Webster payment
Hearts have
announced that they will shortly pay Arbroath £26,000 which they are due as
part of Andy Webster's transfer from Tynecastle to Wigan Athletic in 2006.
The Lichties
are now set to benefit from a sell-on clause built into the transfer
agreement between the two clubs.
The Scotland
international defender was sold on by the Hearts for £150,000.
"The money the
club was due from Wigan was paid within the last few weeks and Arbroath will
now receive their cut," a Hearts spokesperson said.
Webster left
Gayfield for Hearts in 2001 and is currently on loan at Rangers from Wigan.
Hearts had
initially wanted £4m for the centre-half and received £625,000 in
compensation from the English Premier League side and the player himself.
That was
contested in January by Webster via the Court of Arbitration of Sport who
ruled compensation should be just £150,000.

LONG DISTANCE LICHTIE
At the game today we have
a special guest, Tom Whitton, who has travelled all the way from Bournemouth
to see the Lichtie's. Tom who has been an Arbroath fan all his life owns the
Alum Grange Hotel in Alum Chine, Bournemouth. He is up today with his son
Tom and son in law Chris Pilch. Tom who was born in Dundee moved to Surrey
in the early 1970s to learn golf and was trained by the great John Jacobs.
It was there he met and married wife Julie and had 3 children Tom Jnr, Susie
and Kerry.
Tom's son in law Chris
says "I decided to bring Tom back to Gayfield for his first time in 25 years
for the match versus East Stirling but unfortunately that game was postponed
and although everyone at the club was great and we had a skinful in all his
local Arbroath pubs it was a 1000 mile road trip, needless to say we are
FLYING up this time"
Arbroath FC would like to
welcome Tom, Chris and Tom. We hope you enjoy the game today.

"After
losing the league at in the last game of the season at Berwick and missing
out on promotion through the play-offs, I felt we needed to add one or two
quality players in for the push for this season. Instead it seemed we were
losing the quality players like Willie Martin and Marc McCulloch and other
boys were unsure if they were going to sign again. It seemed to me that the
team was weaker instead of stronger."

John Toner – Scotland U18 Cap

Arbroath FC
youth player, John Toner has been celebrating his call up to the National
Squad. John had been representing Angus in Dumfries and was on the coach on
the journey home, when he was told that SFA selectors had been at the game
and had been impressed by his play. He received a letter inviting him to
trials at Inverurie. That went well and another letter arrived asking John
to attend final trials at Stenhousemuir. After another successful trial
John received the letter notifying him that he had made the final squad.
John has had three matches
to date, Hamilton in a warm-up match, then also at New Douglas Park,
Australia were the visitors, with the young Scots running out 4-1 victors.
On Sunday 17th February, while his Arbroath U19 team-mates were
at Broadwood playing Clyde, John was in Jersey helping his Scotland
team-mates defeat their hosts 4-0.
Preparations now turn to
the Centenary Shield matches which will be played over the coming weeks. On
Thursday, after the programme went to print, Scotland entertained Northern
Ireland at Love Street, and then have another home game, playing Wales at
Tannadice. After that there are two away games. Firstly a visit to the
Republic of Ireland and the last game in the series, and possibly the
highlight, will be a visit to the scene of last weeks Carling Cup Final, the
new Wembley Stadium, to take on the Auld Enemy.
Head of Youth Development,
John Reilly said, “Everyone at the club is delighted for John, it is a
fantastic achievement. It is an enormous honour to be chosen to represent
your country at any level, in any sport and this should give all the boys
the motivation to see what is possible for those who have the ability and
the correct attitude. It’s the first step on a long, long ladder and we all
hope he goes out, enjoys the experience and performs well.”

CONDUCT OF
SPECTATORS
Over the
past few weeks, Arbroath Football Club and players have demonstrated
their support for Show Racism The Red Card and the White Ribbon Campaign
against domestic abuse.
Everyone
likes to let off a bit of steam at the match but all we would ask is
that spectators at Gayfield treat everyone, including visiting players,
officials and their guests with dignity and respect.
No-one
needs reminding that bad behaviour on and off the park reflects badly on
any club and generally our supporters are well behaved and bring credit
to Arbroath Football Club.
But any
abusive language towards the visiting dugout, players, officials or
guests contributes nothing towards achieving a result on the field –
it’s not big: it’s not clever and it’s not acceptable! Please help to
ensure that everyone at Gayfield has the opportunity to enjoy the match
in a friendly and sporting environment.
|
Arbroath Football Club has a strict behavioural Policy in
that Racial, Sectarian and other abuse will not be tolerated at any
time. Repeated use of foul or abusive language will be regarded as
verbal assault and persistent offenders will be ejected from the ground. |

Arbroath 4 Cove Rangers 0
The Lichties fielded a mixture of trialists, youths and a sprinkling of experience in this comfortable win over Cove. Bryan Scott, Paul Watson and trialist centre back Alan Campbell made it 3-0 by half time and Andy Reilly added a 4th late on. Talking point of the match was when Cove number 8, Paul Coutts, was red carded for a reckless challenge in the first half. Arbroath always looked comfortable and Cove, who included ex Lichties Craig Cooper and Kevin Tindal and former Dundee Utd defender Scott Paterson never troubled David Currie in the Arbroath goal.

Tuesday 17th July, Arbroath 0 Dundee 1
Trialist Andre Martins, struck as early
as 4 minutes in this friendly at Gayfield when he lobbed the ball over the head
of Scott Morrison. Throughout the game, the Dees looked a well organised side
but failed to capitalise further on their advantage. In the second half, light
began to deteriorate as the thunder approached and Arbroath began to become more
of a threat. Alan Brazil looked particularly lively and linked up well with
Tosh. Recent signing, Chris Hegarty, also showed some nice touches. As they game
drew to a close, Paul Tosh had a goal chalked off for offside and then with a
minute remaining found himself clean through with only the substitute keeper,
Samson, to beat. Tosh tried to lob the ball over the keeper from a few yards out
of the box but Samson blocked the effort by what the referee deemed to be a
hand. Being adjudged to be a deliberate prevention of a goal scoring
opportunity, the referee red carded the replacement goalie which will mean
Samson missing the first SFL match of the season. The resultant Barry Sellars
free kick was saved by stand in goalkeeper Paul Dixon and Dundee held on for the
1-0 win.
Arbroath - Morrison, McMullan, Ferguson, Raeside, Tully,
Smith, Sellars, Webster, Watson, Tosh, Bryan Scott. (Black, Hegarty, Brazil and
trialist Stuart MacKay came on 2nd half)

Forfarshire Cup Final,
Arbroath 2 St Johnstone 3
The Lichties started brightly but the Saints then started to exert their
dominance and Arbroath were 3-0 down at half time with 2 goals from Dutch
striker Dyron Daal and a fine shot from Peter McDonald who latched onto a Paul
Sheerin through ball. In the second half, the Lichties gradually crept into the
game as St Johnstone appeared to tire and lose organisation. On 66 minutes, Alan
Brazil met a fine cross from the right that Kevin Webster had sent in. The
former Aston Villa man calmly chested the ball down and fired past Alan Main. 6
minutes later a scrappy clearance found Paul Watson at the left hand edge of the
box and he rifled a low shot into the net. Arbroath then had chances to send the
game into a penalty shoot out when Webster ran through and tried to curve a ball
around the keeper into the top left of the goal. The ball seemed to be heading
goalward but dipped away at the last moment. Paul Tosh also had a great
opportunity when the ball landed in front of him but his tame effort did little
to trouble the Saints custodian. St Johnstone held out and lifted the trophy.
