DOWN MEMORY LANE

with Davie Dewar

August 31st 1929 v Alloa Athletic (League) at Recreation Park

ARBROATH: - Beatt, Galloway, Stronach, Fraser, Hamilton, Russell, McGregor, Imrie, Dora, Hardie, Gallacher.

ALLOA ATHLETIC: -Thomson, Robertson, Craig, Brown, Clacher (St Andrews Athletic) Buchanan, Connacher, Kelly, Crilley, Campbell, Stoddart .

Arbroath took the lead after just three minutes. Fraser set off on a run and centred to Dora who made off on his own. With two opposing backs closing in on Dora, Hardie rushed forward, shouting:- “Let it go Johnny”!  Dora side stepped the ball to leave HARDIE a clear shot into the corner of the net.

Alloa tried to hit back as both Brown and Campbell had shots on goal but both were well wide with their efforts. Hardie threaded a through ball to DORA who out paced Robertson and hammered the ball pat Thomson for the Lichties second goal.

Early in the second half, Alloa made inroads on Arbroath’s lead with a goal by CRAIG, who scored from a free kick. Imrie almost restored the two gaol cushion but Thomson in the Alloa goal, scrambled the ball away from the foot of his post. Alloa then had the ball in the Arbroath net but Connacher was adjudged to have fouled Beatt and the referee awarded a free kick to Arbroath.

With Arbroath once more on the attack, IMRIE received a pass from Dora and deceived a defender to shoot into the net for Arbroath’s third goal of the game. Then Alloa pulled another goal back. Stronach side stopped Crilley and the ball broke to ex-LIchtie ROBERTSON who slammed the ball into the net.

From the kick off, FRASER slipped the ball to McGregor who tore off down the wing, got into the penalty box and let fly, with the ball landing up in the opposite corner of the net.
