DOWN MEMORY LANE
April 29th 1933 v East Fife (League) at Gayfield
with Davie Dewar
ARBROATH: - Kelly, Fordyce, Stronach, Boath, Muir, Duff, Lowe, Farquhar, Jeffray,
Carver (Forthill) Welsh (Forthill).
EAST FIFE: - Boyle, Wilkie, McGachie, Sharp, Hope, McCurley, Weir, Baxter,
McCartney, Turnbull, Walker.
The game started briskly and Boath shot from a free kick just outside the
penalty area. The Lichties didn’t dwell on that missed opportunity though,
as they took the lead soon afterwards through CARVER. Muir and Lowe forced
an opening and the ball went in to Jeffrey, who headed the ball towards goal.
Boyce diverted the header away but Carver was well placed to return a low
shot into the net for the opening goal.
But with just two minutes of the first half remaining, East Fife levelled
the score. A through pass from Hope found McCARTNEY running in and his rising
shot beat Kelly.
Into the second half and Farquhar combined well with Lowe to place the visitor’s
defence in all kinds of difficulties. From Lowe’s cross, Welsh diverted the
ball across goal to where JEFFREY headed it into the back of the net.
East Fife went in search of an equaliser but were caught out at the other
end of the park and Jeffrey was brought down just outside the penalty area
by Wilkie. At the resultant free kick, Muir ran at the ball and dummied the
defenders. In the confusion BOATH shot the ball past Boyce.
The Fifers did pull a goal back through TURNBULL to make a game of it in the
closing stages. Weir was tackled by Stronach and the ball broke to McCartney
who slipped a pass through to Turnbull to finish. However, the equaliser didn’t
come and Arbroath ran out comfortable winners in the end.
