Arbroath went into this game, having clinched promotion, the previous week. A two-nil victory over Ayr United at Gayfield ensured their return to the First Division after an absence of eight years.
After five minutes of this match Alloa shocked their hosts as Cargill, under pressure in the box, headed back weakly to his keeper and MUIR nipped in to shoot past Williamson. But the Lichties retaliated quickly. Bruce had a good run, he chipped neatly to Wilkie but the winger was caught offside.
Alloa were on the attack again with Walker winning possession. He placed an inviting cross into the box but Ure just failed to connect. Alloa went further in front after twenty-six minutes. Walker got the ball after a poor clearance by Hughes. His cross was headed goalwards by URE and it went in off the post.
Arbroath finally opened their account after thirty-three minutes through BRUCE, with a low shot that struck a post and squirmed under the Keeper’s body. Three minutes from the interval, the homesters had a great chance to level the score. Jack passed to Bruce and the inside man was presented with an open goal but did not put enough venom in his shot and the keeper brought off a great one handed save.
Arbroath finally equalised in fifty-two minutes. A Bruce piledriver was saved by Hodge at the expense of a corner. Wilkie took the flag kick and BRUCE headed home. Arbroath were not finished yet though and ten minutes from time, JACK scored the winner with a low shot into the corner of the net. In the closing minutes, Jack had a shot brilliantly saved by the keeper.
Final Score: - ARBROATH 3 v ALLOA ATHLETIC 2
