October 26^th 1957 v Stenhousemuir (League) at Ochilview

 

ARBROATH: - Williamson, Young, McLevy, Beveridge, Fraser, Archibald, Kirkwood, Brown, McGrory, Shirreffs ,Sharp.

STENHOUSEMUIR: - McFeat, Sutherland, Hogg, Kennedy, Silcock, Forbes, Cousin, Campbell, Stewart, Kilgannon, Keilt.

 

Stenhousemuir started brightly. Beveridge and Campbell both chased a loose ball and collided just inside the penalty area. The referee awarded a spot kick that KEILT dispatched into the empty net, having sent Williamson the wrong way.

 

At the other end, Arbroath won a corner which was taken by Sharp and McFeat failed to hold but Sutherland reacted first, to clear before McGrory could get to the ball.

 

Shortly afterwards, Brown burst down the right but his shot was inches too high. After half an hour the Lichties found themselves two down. Cousins raced past McLevy and his cross found CAMPBELL twelve yards out and he made no mistake with a powerful shot.

The second half was only two minutes old when Arbroath thought they had pulled one back when Brown netted and the referee gave a goal but the linesman had his flag raised and the whistler chalked the goal off after consulting his linesman. Stenny were awarded a free kick instead.

Arbroath did get on the score sheet in fifty six minutes when McGRORY scored from the spot after Sutherland had fouled Sharp in the box.  McFeat managed to get a hand to it but failed to keep the ball out.

The visitors were back on level terms in seventy minutes with McGRORY getting his and Arbroath’s second goal; of the afternoon. Five minutes later, with the home defence all at sea BROWN netted what proved to be the winning goal.
