January 26th 1957 v Cowdenbeath (League) at Gayfield

with Davie Dewar

ARBROATH: - Williamson, Milne, Gray, Archibald, Nicoll, McKenzie, Kirkwood, Shirreffs, McGrory, Fernie, and Sharp.

COWDENBEATH: - Barrie, Campbell, Brown, Duncan, Erskine, Reid, Gilfillan, Stewart, Quinn, Murray and Beckett.

Arbroath had wind advantage in the first half and it was no surprise when the homesters took the lead after twenty-three minutes. Shirreffs split the Cowden defence open, McGrory nodded the ball down to Fernie who let fly with a rocket of a shot that gave Barrie, in goal, no chance. Very little was seen of the visitors in attack and in thirty seven minutes, Arbroath doubled their lead through Fernie when he latched on to a through pass from McGrory and fired a shot into the back of the net.

The Lichties made the points safe in forty-two minutes with a third goal from Shirreffs. As Barrie came across goal in an attempt to intercept a cross ball the Arbroath man nipped in and slipped the ball past the keeper into the opposite corner of the net.

In a goal-less second half, Kirkwood, who had his leg strapped up to protect an injury, hit a great shot that skimmed the bar. Milne also came close when his effort from forty yards was dropped by Barrie. But the keeper recovered in time to claw the ball back off the goal line.

Final Score: - ARBROATH 3 v COWDENBEATH 0
