In a little over twenty one years or researching this feature for the programme this is the farthest I have delved back into the archives. But it no matter which period of the club’s history is featured on this page; the feature most mentioned in match reports is the seemingly ever-present wind.

In the first half Arbroath were playing into a strong wind but within a minute of kicking off, the Lichties took the lead. DAVIDSON drove in a low hard shot which left the Montrose keeper with no chance of making a save. Just a few minutes later Arbroath added a second and the game was already running away from Montrose. McGlashan shot for goal and the ball was headed past his own keeper by GORDON.

At the other end Jackson’s shot hit the bar. Arbroath went straight back to the other end where Milne netted but was ruled offside. A hard shot from Middleton was just inches over the bar. Then Montrose were awarded a penalty kick which came to nothing. Harris saved the spot kick in an unconventional way by standing at one post and rushing towards the ball when kicked. MIDDLETON put the game beyond Montrose when he netted Arbroath’s third goal just before half time.

Arbroath had most of the play in the second half but they only added one more goal to their tally courtesy of MIDDLETON.

Footnote: -  In one report, the Montrose keeper was listed as Barclay and the right back as Allan. Other than that the line ups were the same. It was the Montrose right back who took their penalty.
