Co-incidentally, Arbroath were due to play Cowdenbeath in a league match on this day.
The visitors started brightly and mounted several attacks on the Arbroath goal. Docherty was injured in clearing one of those attacks and limped off the pitch. But after some treatment he returned to the field a few minutes later.
After just eight minutes, the Lichties had a great chance of taking the lead. A cross from Yule found Hyslop a few yards out but his shot was straight at the keeper and Allan saved easily. Then Shaw had a fierce shot brilliantly turned round the post by Allan.
After thirty four minutes,
Arbroath finally took the lead. Shaw’s corner found YOUNG who headed the ball
towards goal. His header beat Allan and despite a clearance by Rowland the
referee indicated that the ball had crossed the goal line. This goal spurred the
visitors on and in fifty eight minutes
But Cowden did not have to wait long for the equaliser – they were level after sixty three minutes. Forrest’s shot was blocked by Martin but Scrimgeour’s clearance fell to LIDDELL who dispatched the ball into the net from close range.
