October 23^rd 1965 v Albion Rovers (League) at Gayfield

ARBROATH:- Samson, Cameron Hughes, Kennedy, Pierson, Henderson, Donnelly, Morrison, Sandeman, Wilkie.

ALBION ROVERS:- Madden, McTurk, Murphy, Brown, Jamieson, Wilson, McCallum, Harrower, Johnstone, Green, Dillon

Arbroath were livelier in the opening exchanges and forced a corner early on but it was easily cleared by the visiting defence. Jamieson was short with a pass back but Madden was alert to the situation and cleared the ball as Morrison came rushing in.

Arbroath were a goal up after just seven minutes through HENDERSON who headed home Wilkie’s corner kick. The home side then doubled their advantage two minutes later. Donnelly bored through the defence and crossed for MORRISON to net.

Rovers replied with a header from Johnstone that wasn’t far off the mark. Then a fierce shot from Wilkie at the other gave Madden all sorts of trouble in holding on to the ball. As play swung from end to end, Samson stopped a shot by Dillon but dropped the ball, Green got there first but Stirling blocked his effort on the line.

Into the second half and Arbroath continued where they had left off in the first and Madden had to get down low to save a shot from Donnelly. But Arbroath failed to capitalise on their chances and in fifty four minutes the visitors pulled one back. A free kick from Harrower was prodded into the net by DILLON. Ten minutes later, Rovers were back on level terms when a first time shot from GREEN beat Samson on the line. Near the finish, Arbroath came close to restoring their lead but McTurk cleared at the foot of the post.
