DOWN MEMORY LANE

20th December 1958 v Keith (Dewar Shield Semi-Final) at Gayfield

with Davie Dewar

ARBROATH: - Williamson, McLevy, Young, McLean, Fraser, Sinclair, Shirreffs, Anderson, Easson, Stephen, Quinn. KEITH: - Curran, Woodcock, Abel, Buchan, Wood, Main, Christie, Vandermotten, Byers, McKenzie, Buck.

Keith’s inside right was ex maroon, Vandermotten who played for the Lichties during the 1956/57 season. The visitors made a bright start to the game and a long range effort from Main tested Williamson to the full. The Keeper did well to turn it over the bar for a corner. But it was Arbroath who scored first and they took the lead in seven minutes in rather fortunate circumstances. A defender’s clearance rebounded off Anderson and landed at the feet of EASSON who smashed an unstoppable shot past Curran. (Easson went on to become top goal scorer by notching forty five league Goals for Arbroath that season)

A powerful shot from Anderson brought out a great save by Curran who stopped a great volley by the same player shortly afterwards. Then a header by Anderson looked net bound but Curran pulled off another grand save.

Early in the second half, Arbroath increased their lead. Easson sent Quinn through. His shot was stooped by Curran but he failed to hold on to the ball and ANDERSON was on hand to knock the ball into the net.

In sixty four minutes, Arbroath added a third. Easson, out on the right, crossed the ball and SHIRREFFS headed the ball past Curran.

With Keith looking to get back into the game, Buck’s shot was pushed over the bar by Williamson. But in eighty two minutes, Keith got a consolation goal with BUCHAN heading home Christie’s corner kick.

Final Score: - ARBROATH 3 v KEITH 1
