ARBROATH: - Marshall, Mackay, McAlpine, Cargill, Waddell, Rylance, Sellars, Cant, Pirie, Stanton, Payne. Sub; Fletcher.
DUMBARTON: - Whigham, Jenkins, Wilkinson, Cushley, Bolton, McKay, Wilson, McCormack, Wallace, Graham, McAdam. Sub; Coleman.
With Arbroath on the attack, McAlpines through ball found Pirie who unleashed a powerful shot that Whigham did well to block. Then McCormack was through on goal but a timely intervention by Cargill saved the Lichties bacon.
Whigham then had to deal with a hot one from Mackay. Rylance had a shot that grazed the crossbar on the way over the top. Just before the interval the home side appealed for a penalty when Sellars was fouled by McKay but after consulting with the linesman, the referee awarded a free kick on the edge of the box instead.
Early in the second half a Cargill shot hit the side netting. Then Whigham had to be alert to hold a shot from Stanton. Pirie had a shot that hit the upright and still the visitors goal remained intact. Then a forty yard free kick seemed destined for the back of the net until McKay stuck out a foot to clear.
In fifty nine minutes, Arbroath finally broke the deadlock when PIRIE sent in a free kick that Whigham fumbled and the ball landed behind him. Jenkins headed it out again but the referee adjudged that it had crossed the line.
Four minutes later Arbroath got a second when PAYNE beat a couple of players and smashed a shot past the keeper. But within a minute, Dumbarton reduced the deficit through WALLACE who headed home from close range.
