February 18th 1928 v Armadale, League, at Gayfield

with Davie Dewar

ARBROATH: - Mitchell, Kynoch, Stronach, Wilson, Hamilton, Russell, Gentles, Warrender, Cowie, Boath (W) Farquhar.

ARMADALE: - King, Toner, Reid, McCracken, Muir, Calderwood, Hunter, Love, Holt, Junior, Poland.

In the first half, Arbroath had the advantage of a strong wind at their backs. After seven minutes they opened their account. Farquhar lobbed the ball into the middle of the box and the keeper caught the ball but GENTLES nudged him (and the ball) over the goal line. Hamilton went close shortly after that when his shot hit the crossbar.

After twenty minutes, Lichties got a second goal when GENTLES tapped home a loose ball. Arbroath looked to have scored a third but the Armadale players surrounded the referee and him then awarded a free kick to the visitors. Close on half time, Arbroath did get their third goal when Hamilton’s drive was half cleared and COWIE followed up to score.

In sixty eight minutes, Gentles squared the ball and COWIE netted his second goal of the match from close in. Seven minutes later, Arbroath went nap and GENTLES got his hat trick. Farquhar presented him with a lovely ball, making the task of beating goalkeeper King a simple one.

Final result ARBROATH 5 v ARMADALE 0
