DOWN MEMORY LANE

April 17th 1971 v Queens Park (League) at Gayfield

with Davie Dewar

ARBROATH: - Wilson, Milne, McKay, Cargill, Waddell, Walker McCaffer, Stanton Jack, Bruce, Sellars. Sub:- Hughes.

QUEENS PARK - Taylor, Barr, Thomson, Neil, Hunter, McLaughlin, Fearn, Campbell.

Arbroath had the advantage of a strong wind and this showed early on when Wilson took a goal kick which Sellars chased in to the visitor’s penalty box. Taylor came off his line to palm the ball behind for a fruitless corner. Campbell then came close with a shot. Arbroath won a free kick, Sellars connected with his head but Taylor brought off a great save.

A corner kick from Walker had to be tipped over the bar by Taylor. Then Taylor had to get low down to Jack’s free kick. A minute before the interval, Hunter pulled Cargill down in the box WALKER made no mistake with the resultant penalty kick.

In the second half, a header from Jack laded on top of the visitor’s net. With four minutes remaining, Jack made progress on the right but his shot hit an upright and spun back into play.

April 20th 1963 v Queens Park (League) at Hampden

QUEENS PARK: - Clark, Vernon, Neil, Stewart, Dougany, Grant, Hopper, Buchanan, Broadman, McKay, Kilpatrick.

ARBROATH: - McGann (Lochee Harp) Cameron, Hughes, Robertson, Stirling, Kennedy, Soutar, Easson, Tulloch, Matthews, Cargill.

Early in the first half, Stirling and grant had a clash of heads, Stirling returned after some treatment on the touchline. After eighteen minutes, Arbroath took the lead. Soutar raced down the right, pushed a ball through to TULLOCH, who blasted a low shot past Clark.

From a Queens’s corner, the cross found McKay whose powerful shot was blocked on the line by Hughes and then cleared. A McKay shot looked like a certain goal but McGann falling backwards, somehow managed to turn the ball over the bar.

In thirty seven minutes, the home side were awarded a rather fortunate penalty kick when Stirling fell in the box and accidentally handed the ball in the process.

GRANT sent the ball into the far corner of the net from the spot kick.

In the second half, Arbroath were forced to play with ten men as Stirling was taken to Glasgow infirmary at half time. (There were no substitutes in those days) Neil had a twenty five yard shot that crashed off the bar. Towards the end of the game, The Junior keeper McGann brought off a brilliant one handed save from a hard drive by Buchanan.
