DOWN MEMORY LANE

January 17th 1925 v East Fife (League) at Gayfield

with Davie Dewar

ARBROATH: - Stewart, Robertson, Allison, Wilson, Hamilton, Fox, Smith, Hardie, Newman, Deuchars, Black.

EAST FIFE: - Neish, Wood, Dunsmuir, Cahill, Wilson, Russell, Simpson, Barret, Weir, Wright, Bell.

The fifers had most of the play for the first twenty minutes of the game and they took the lead through Wright. Robertson conceded a corner and Bell crossed into the goalmouth. Stewart palmed the ball away but before he recovered his footing, Wright hooked the ball into the net.

Their lead was short lived though as Arbroath were back level within minutes. Newman slipped a ball through to Hardie who weaved through the visitors' defence and squared the ball to DEUCHARS who gave Neish no chance.

Early in the second half and Arbroath went in front for the first time in the game. As the East Fife defence hesitated, HARDIE ran through to score. As East Fife went in search of the equaliser, Stewart in the Arbroath goal saved the Lichties time and again. Even in the last minute of the game he was called upon to dive at the feet of Weir to prevent another goal-scoring opportunity for the Fifers.

Final Result – Arbroath 2 EAST FIFE 1
