DOWN MEMORY LANE
March 16th 1936 v East Stirlingshire, League, At Gayfield
with Davie Dewar
EAST STIRLINGSHIRE: - Kyle, Dyet, Hoggan, Thomson (G) Brown, kemp, Cameron, Hasson, Peat, Turnbull, Junior.
Early on in the game, Lowe had an effort that just scraped the crossbar. Then Brand was through on goal and just about to shoot when a timely intervention by Brown saved the day for the visitors. At the other end, Junior’s cross was spilled by Cumming and it fell to Hasson who shot over the bar.
Kemp appeared to have brought down Lowe in the penalty area and the home crowd made their resentment clearly audible when the referee failed to award a penalty. McNab then came close when he took a free kick from just outside the box but it flew went over the bar.
In fifty minutes, the homesters had another penalty claim. This time the referee pointed to the spot for a rather soft award compared to the earlier incident. Brand had sent through a ball to Duff, who appeared to be sandwiched between two defenders in the area and the penalty was duly given.
McNAB took the kick and Kyle got a hand to it but could not keep the ball out of the net. Shortly afterwards, Connaboy and Brand combined to attack Kyle’s goal and a melee ensued involving about a dozen players. The referee made several bookings.
In the last few minutes, Kyle made a save on the ground, Connaboy fired the ball goalwards and Brown fisted the ball over the bar. It was clearly an infringement that warranted a penalty kick but the referee inexplicably gave a corner kick instead.

March 11th 1995 v East Stirlingshire, League, At Gayfield
ARBROATH: - Dunn, McMillan, Middleton, Farnan, Shanks, Kerr, Tosh, Porteous, Pew, Gardner, Scott. Subs:- Elliot, Lindsay, Jackson.
EAST STIRLINGSHIRE: - McDougall, Watt, Lee (R) Millar, Snedden, Ross, Lee (I) Geraghty, Abercromby, Cuthbert, Dwer. Subs:- Conroy, Stirling, Moffat.
Arbroath had a good opening after just two minutes when Tosh and McMillan worked a throw in on the right. Tosh’s cross was knocked down by Pew for Gardner, who fired in a shot from ten yards but it flew over the bar.
Arbroath had most of the play in the first half hour but Dunn had to make a save from Lee (R) in what was the visitors’ sole effort in that period. After thirty five minutes, Arbroath finally went in front. McDougall under pressure from pew, hit his clearance straight to SCOTT waiting outside the box. He fired the ball straight into the corner of the net. The visitors responded immediately with a move that almost paid off. Watt flighted over a cross and Cuthbert was only inches away from connecting with the ball for a chance on goal.
They were to rue that missed opportunity when Arbroath doubled their lead in thirty eight minutes. A Porteous pass found TOSH who beat a defender before dispatching it into the net. Three minutes before the interval, the Lichties made it three nil. Again Porteous found TOSH and from just inside the penalty area, he fired the ball past McDougall.
In fifty one minutes, Shire pulled one back when Dunn came out to field a long ball but DWER headed it past him. Shortly afterwards, the visitors reduced the deficit further when a blunder by Dunn allowed Geraghty to tap home.
Arbroath stretched their lead again in eighty four minutes when TOSH completed his hat trick by drilling a low shot past McDougall. In the last minute, the Lichties went nap from a corner kick. A Sneddon clearance fell to McMILLAN who promptly scored his first goal for Arbroath.
