Having covered the cup game against Elgin City in a previous programme I decided to feature a team that wouldn’t normally appear in this section of the programme. I very much doubt if anyone present today was at the game all those years ago.

Oct 15th 1921 v Lochgelly Utd (League) at Gayfield Park

ARBROATH:- Jenkins, Law, Ferguson, Mathers, Henderson, Stirling, Herron, Stewart, Christie, Thomson, Farquhar.
LOCHGELLY UNITED:- Paterson, Penman, Gay, Berry, Galloway, Nicoll, Tonnar, Reid, Fisher, Kirkby, McKinnon.

In the first half, the Fifers had the advantage of a strong wind. Tonnar had a shot that flew just over the bar. Fisher was next to have a go and Jenkins had difficulty in saving but gathered the ball at the second attempt. Following Herron’s cross onto the goalmouth, Paterson got to the ball just ahead of Christie to cut out the danger. At the other end, Galloway beat two defenders and his shot brought out a grand save from home keeper, Jenkins. Galloway was a constant threat to the Arbroath defence and drove in a fierce shot that Jenkins dealt with safely.
Just before half time, Farquhar – on the ground in the goalmouth – hooked the ball towards goal. It beat Paterson but hit the side netting and the deadlock remained unbroken.
After the re-start, the homesters should have taken the lead when Christie had the goal at his mercy but shot weakly past the upright. Undaunted, Arbroath kept up the pressure on the away goal and finally got their reward, three minutes from time.
Paterson cleared a shot from Farquhar and it landed kindly for Stewart who had no difficulty in tapping the ball home.
