February 14th 1964 v Bradford City (friendly) at Valley Parade

with Davie Dewar

ARBROATH: - Thomson, Cameron, Hughes, McMillan, Stirling, Kennedy, Ewen, Donnelly, Morrison, Murray, and Matthews.

BRADFORD CITY: - Fisher, Kelly, Allan Wragg, Blacker, Harland, Hall, Stowell, Green, Hellawell, and Thorpe.

The old second division had nineteen teams and each team had two blank days in the fixture list. Arbroath took the opportunity to fix up this Friday night encounter.

Arbroath had the better of the opening exchanges but it was Bradford who opened the scoring, after six minutes, against the run of play. A header from GREEN beat Thomson. But Arbroath were soon back on level terms when in the fourteenth minute, MURRAY smashed the ball past Fisher to equalise. Kennedy and Murray were both unlucky not to score with long range attempts as the first half drew to a close.

Bradford were handed a gilt edged opportunity to restore their lead in sixty-six minutes when they were awarded a penalty. But Harland took the spot kick and fired his effort wide of the post. The home side were to rue that missed chance when Arbroath were awarded a penalty kick of their own. A Donnelly shot was punched out from under the bar by Kelly and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Kennedy made no mistake with his set piece, to secure the winning goal for Arbroath.
