August 12^th 1978 v Dumbarton (League) at Gayfield

 

ARBROATH: - Lister, McKenzie, Rylance, Cargill, Wells, Fettes, Fletcher, Carson, Gavine, Mylles, Yule. Subs:- Follon, Mitchell.

DUMBARTON: - Williamson, Sinclair, McNeil, McCluskey, Gallacher (J) McLeod 9M) brown, Fyfe, Gallacher (B) Blair, Whiteford (D) Subs Coyle, McLean.

 

In the opening minute, Fletcher's fierce shot was deflected over the bar for a corner to Arbroath that came to nothing. At the other end McLeod's effort went wide of the goal. Dumbarton continued to press and J Gallacher was favourably placed but his shot flew over the bar.

In twenty three minutes, the visitors took the lead when McLeod's pass found BLAIR, who shot past Lister.

Arbroath almost went two behind on the half hour mark but Brown's swerving shot went inches past the post. Just before the interval, Fettes shot struck McCluskey and scraped past the post with Williamson stranded.

Arbroath drew level with just three minutes of the second half played. Yule sent a free kick to MYLLES who bet the keeper with a shot from twenty yards out. Ten minutes, Mylles should have scored again but from point blank range he somehow contrived to miss his chance.

In the last few minutes of the game, Dumbarton almost grabbed a winner when a Fyfe shot came crashing off the bar before being cleared.
