DOWN MEMORY LANE

May 1st 1982 v East Fife (League) at Gayfield

with Davie Dewar

ARBROATH:- Robertson, Forsyth, Kopel, Glover, Young, Shaw, Powell, Hill (H) Robb, Burke, Steele. Subs:- Harley, Yule.

EAST FIFE:- Gorman, McLaren, Clarke, Muirhead, Halley, Beveridge, Neilson, Wedderburn, Scott, Thomson, Caithness. Subs:- Durie, O’Brien.

East Fife took the lead after just nine minutes when Robertson made a hash of a goal kick. Scott sized up the situation and lobbed the ball over Young, CAITHNESS was onto the ball quickly and hammered the ball past Robertson who was rooted to the spot and could do nothing to make amends.

Young had a  chance at the other end but his header went just over the bar. Then Gorman saved a diving header from Powell. Just before the interval, the Lichties were awarded a penalty kick when Halley was adjudged to have pushed Robb in the back. ROBB took the kick himself and sent Gorman the wrong way to equalise.

In the second half it was the home side that did most of the attacking but they couldn't make the breakthrough. At one point Arbroath were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area but East Fife had all eleven men back in the box defending and it came to nothing.
