ARBROATH LEGENDS

Walter Cameron by Fraser Clyne

Walter Cameron was a regular for Arbroath between 1962 and 1969 playing in the Albert Henderson team, predominantly at right back.

Walter first made his mark playing in the Gairdoch United team which won the “Lord Weir Trophy” in the 58/59 season, beating an Edina Hearts team which included the likes of John Greig and Eric Stevenson in the final. Like many of his team mates Walter was signed for a senior club at that point and joined Falkirk as a 17 year old that same year.

Walter then joined Arbroath in 1962 and made his debut at Cappielow in August against Morton in front of a crowd of around 10,000. This was to be the start of a seven season stay at Gayfield, and what was undoubtedly the most enjoyable and satisfying period of his career.

Not surprisingly, the highlight of that stay was the promotion winning season of 67/68 and the celebrations which followed the 2-0 defeat of Ayr United on the 20th April in front of 2776 supporters at Gayfield.

It was during the 68/69 season in the first division that Walter suffered what was ultimately a career ending knee injury. The injury kept him sidelined for over 5 months, and Walter then left Arbroath to play one season for Alloa before retiring from senior football.

Of the three senior clubs that Walter played with there is absolutely no doubt at all about where his affections lie.

The two pictures are both from his debut against Morton in August 1962, and he is top left in the team picture.
