Montrose 1 – 1 Arbroath – Match Report

Matchday 2 – Ladbrokes League 2 – Season 2016 / 2017

Saturday 13th August 2016, Links Park, Montrose, 3.00pm kick of

Arbroath left Links Park with a point after holding on for the final 30 minutes with 10 men.

A strong wind gave Montrose the advantage in the first half but they failed to capitalise and were punished when Bryan Prunty put pressure on the Montrose defence.

Prunty’s persistence paid off as he won the ball and was free to cross into the box where it just fell to the wrong side of Linn, but Ryan McCord was ready to pounce and made no mistake from 12 yards giving the Lichties the lead in the 34th minute.

The second half was only seconds old when the first controversial decision was made by referee Stephen Kirkland. Steven Doris was running through on goal and was taken out by the last defender.

The Arbroath players and fans expected a free kick and a red card, but instead Kirkland hesitated and went with the stand side assistant referee’s decision of a corner kick for Montrose.

Arbroath were looking hungry for a second but goalscorer McCord was then booked for a challenge on Kieran McWalter, before seconds laterMcWalter was booked for challenging McCord in the 52nd minute. Only another 7 minutes would pass before the main talking point of the match. A foul by McCord on Masson seen referee Kirkland reach for his cards, flashing McCord another yellow before the red.

Dick Campbell brought on David Gold for Bryan Prunty with Steven Doris forced to play as a long striker for 10 men Lichties.

Perhaps it was the inconsistency shown by the man in the middle which upset the traveling fans the most as substitute David Gold was nearly decapitated by a high boot from Webster yet the Montrose player escaped his notebook.

Montrose started to peg Arbroath back into their own half and they equalised in the 77th minute when Templeman connect with a Masson cross.

Arbroath brought on Josh Skelly and Kane Hester for the final 10 minutes and Hester almost snatched a winner after good work but hit his shot over the bar.
