Arbroath 1 – 2 Bolton Wanderers – Match Summary
Arbroath went down to English Championship side Bolton Wanderers tonight at Gayfield in a very competitive match which once again Arbroath proved their skill and hunger against another top full side team.
The Lichties were playing their 3rd match in 5 days and the were without a number of first team regulars it was a make shift line up as Gavin Swankie, Ricky Little, Mark Whatley, and Ryan McCord all missed out.
The Lichties did welcome back Gavin Malin and Omar Kader and started with Gomes in goal, Malin at right back, O’Brien and Hamilton in the middle with David Gold playing at left back.
Omar Kader started on the right wing with Yule and Jamie Henry in the middle with Denholm on the left wing and Doris and Hester up front.
On the bench were Bobby Linn, Josh Skelly, Bryan Prunty and Calum Brodie.
Arbroath started brightly and Steven Doris got the first strike of the night but his shot was dragged wide after he ran on goal. Thomas O’Brien connected with a volley at the back post from a corner but his shot was high.
Bolton came back into with shots from Adam Le Fondre and Jeff King.
The deadlock was broke in the 31st minute when Colin Hamilton was adjudged to have brought down Le Fondre. It seemed like play was waved on after Hamilton’s tackle but after a few seconds referee John McKendrick pointed to the spot.
Adam Le Fondre blasted his penalty right down the middle giving Rick Gomes no chance.
However a minute later and the Lichties were given a chance to get right back into it as Omar Kader was taken out by Bolton Keeper Mark Howard. Steven Doris stepped up and scored his second penalty in 2 games.
The Lichties almost grabbed the lead after a great run by Hester into the box but his cut back into the middle of the goal was cleared for a corner.
Half time – Arbroath 1 – 1 Bolton Wanderers
Bolton brought on keeper Ben Alnwick on for Mark Howard at half time and Josh Skelly replaced Gavin Malin.
The Lichties made a really positive start to the second half but were undone in the cruelest way when Danny Denholm got a touch onto Connor Hall’s cut back with the ball trickling past Ricky Gomes into the back of the net.
Arbroath brought on Bryan Prunty and Bobby Linn in the 60th minute for Steven Doris and Kane Hester while Bolton changed all 10 outfield players.
Steven Doris had to return back onto the pitch minutes later as Thomas O’Brien took a knock, before Kane Hester returned into the action for Omar Kader.
Arbroath’s defence at that stage was Hester (RB) Henry (CB) Hamilton (CB) and Gold (LB)
The Lichties played some nice football and Gold, Doris and Hester all had outstanding games.
Ricky Gomes was replaced with Calum Brodie towards the end of the game and despite Bolton having more possession they failed to really threaten Brodie in the Arbroath goal
