Arbroath 1 – 1 Dundee United (3-5 Penalties)

Arbroath snatched a draw against Dundee United in the opening game of Betfred Cup, Group C at Gayfield tonight.

A determined and resolute performance from the Lichties and especially 17 year old man of the match keeper Robbie Mutch had frustrated the United players and their large support.

A cruel late goal by Henri Anier looked to have snatched all 3 points for United, but in a never say die attitude the Lichties battled to the final whistle and secured a draw when Colin Hamilton bundled the ball over the line in the dying seconds to earn the Lichties a point.

In a new format, the game then went to penalty kicks, with the winner being awarded an extra bonus point. Charlie Telfer, Coll Donaldson, Paul Dixon, Harry Souter all scored for United, with Colin Hamilton, Steven Doris and Mark Whatley netting for the Lichties, but Cammy Bell tipped Liam Callaghan’s shot onto the post which allowed Scott Fraser to step up and secure the bonus point for United.

It was an exciting opening game for the Betfred Cup, and no doubt with their battling performance the Lichties will have won new supporters from the TV Audience.
