Brechin 1-1 Arbroath

Paul McLean's late equaliser was enough to earn Brechin a point against Arbroath.

Chances were at a premium in the first half, but Josh Falkingham came closest to giving Arbroath the lead when his effort came back off a post on the half-hour mark.

The visitors finally broke the deadlock after 71 minutes when Steven Doris was on hand to fire home Gavin Swankie's cross.

Brechin pulled level 10 minutes from time when McLean found the top corner after good work from Paul McManus.

Falkingham could have sealed all three points in the final minute but his long-range drive was well saved by Craig Nelson.

The point means second-placed Arbroath move 11 points clear of Dumbarton but they are four points adrift of leaders Cowdenbeath who earned all three points against Albion Rovers.

The Red Lichties extended their advantage just before the interval, Collin Samuel netting from inside the area.

Second-half substitute Lee Sibanda added a third after 75 minutes with a neat close-range finish.

The home side pulled a goal back on 80 minutes when Martyn Fotheringham fired home from the edge of the area.

Arbroath replied immediately, Sheerin adding a fourth after good work from Brian Kerr on the left wing.

Arbroath 2-0 Stirling Albion

Arbroath moved to within two points of Scottish Second Division leaders Cowdenbeath after beating rock-bottom Stirling.

It did not take long for the Red Lichties to hit their straps as they surged into a ninth-minute lead when Steven Doris converted from close range to notch his 11th of the season.

They continued to dominate but were made to wait until first-half stoppage time to double their advantage, courtesy of player-manager Paul Sheerin's low drive into the corner after good work by Doris.

Stuart Malcolm saw his header saved by Stirling defender Callum Reidford while Sheerin blazed over as the hosts searched for a third. Graham Weir almost made a game of it in a rare attack for the visitors, but his shot went wide and Arbroath coasted home.

Arbroath 0 - 4 Rangers

Nikica Jelavic returned from injury to inspire Rangers to a comfortable victory over Arbroath in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.

Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor had superbly denied Josh Falkingham before the 17th-minute opener.

Jelavic was involved as Edu set up David Healy to fire past Darren Hill.

Craig Wedderburn deflected a Jelavic cross into his own net, the Croat fired in the third after the break and Salim Kerkar's volley finished the scoring.

A capacity crowd of 5,900 had packed Gayfield Park, with more than half of them praying for the first major shock of the weekend's fourth-round ties.

But the Scottish Premier Leaguechampions clinically inflicted the Second Division promotion hopefuls' first home defeat since their opening fixture of the season, when they were knocked out of the Ramsdens Cup 2-1 by Dundee.

Fit-again top scorer Jelavic returned for Rangers along with John Fleck in place of the injured Kyle Lafferty and suspended Steven Davis.

And the Croatia striker was immediately involved, flicking the ball into the path of Healy, who should have done better than half-volley over from 12 yards.

The Red Lichties, unchanged despite their defeat by Dumbarton, responded without any signs of an inferiority complex and twice came close to taking a surprise lead.

After a slip by Carlos Bocanegra, the United States defender named as captain in Davis's absence, Steven Doris raced into the penalty box and flashed a low drive just wide of the far post from 14 yards.

Falkingham was next to threaten following a corner, his volley deflecting off Maurice Edu and spinning over McGregor, who stretched back to turn the ball over the crossbar.

Healy failed to connect properly when set up by Jelavic 12 yards in front of goal, but Arbroath threatened at a couple more corners before the Northern Ireland striker eventually made the breakthrough.

Jelavic combined with Edu before the USA midfielder slipped the ball through for Healy, who poked the ball under advancing goalkeeper Hill.

The relief was obvious in the Rangers ranks and they stretched their lead five minutes later when a low cross from Jelavic was diverted into his own net by Wedderburn under pressure from Edu.

Arbroath did not let their heads dip and could have been handed a lifeline had Gavin Swankie been awarded a penalty for a jersey tug by Sone Aluko.

The Rangers midfielder survived that scare to force Hill into a good block followed by a fine low save at the other end.

Arbroath player-manager Paul Sheerin had no intention of resorting to a damage-limitation exercise as he swapped a midfielder for a striker at half-time, Liam Caddis being replaced with Lee Sibanda.

However, it was Rangers who squandered a chance immediately after the break, with Fleck diving to send a header well wide following a swift break from Jelavic.

There were muted calls for a penalty when Sibanda bounced off the body of Rangers defender Dorin Goian, but the visitors ended any prospect of a surprise comeback after 58 minutes.

Aluko's clever through ball set up Jelavic and the Croatian finished clinically off the inside of the far post from 12 yards.

Algerian subsitute Kerkar grabbed his first goal for Rangers with a controlled 15-yard volley from a Healy cross 13 minutes from time before missing a chance to stretch the lead further.

Dumbarton 3-2 Arbroath

Dumbarton gained revenge on Arbroath for two defeats earlier in the season with a late Patrick Walker strike securing a win.

The hosts went ahead after 20 minutes, Bryan Prunty getting on the end of Mark Lemont's cross from the left to head in his ninth goal of the season.

Arbroath levelled soon after through their top scorer Steven Doris, who powered home a Brian Kerr through-ball to notch his 10th of the campaign.

Gavin Swankie played in Josh Falkingham to slot the Smokies ahead before the break.

Stephen Grindlay produced a great reaction save to deny Liam Caddis from extending Arbroath's lead after the interval and Alan Lithgow went down the other end to level for Dumbarton and set up a nervous finale.

Deep into stoppage time, substitute Walker drilled in Anthony Wallace's delivery to snatch Dumbarton's first win in five matches.

Cowdenbeath 0-0 Arbroath

The Scottish Division Two's top two played out a goaless draw as Cowdenbeath and Arbroath struggled in difficult conditions.

There were only a handful of shots as neither goalkeeper had a save to make until the last five minutes on a pitch which passed a late inspection.

Josh Falkingham had three long-range efforts for Arbroath that all missed the target while Marc McKenzie had two similar pot-shots for Cowdenbeath.

The only save of the match came with three minutes to go, as Kieran McAnespie got his head on the end of a Gavin Swankie free-kick, but Thomas Flynn punched away in the Cowdenbeath goal.

The close-range header was the closest the match came to a goal, as both sides seemed more than happy to settle for a point in a dour affair.

Arbroath missed the chance to go top of Scottish Football League Division Two as Paul McManus claimed a point for Brechin City.

Stuart Malcolm's header struck the bar as Arbroath threatened in the first half.

But substitute McManus turned home Derek Carcary's deep cross in the last minute to ensure a draw.

Airdrie United 3-3 Arbroath

A brace from Ryan Donnelly earned Airdrie United a draw as Arbroath missed the chance to go top of Scottish Football League Division Two.

Gavin Swankie curled home a 25-yard free-kick to give Arbroath a second-minute lead.

But Paul Lovering levelled from the penalty spot four minutes later after Brian Kerr had handled in the area.

A spot-kick at the other end gave the visitors an advantage at the break, Steven Doris converting after Kevin Green was penalised for handling.

Josh Falkingham's clinical right-foot finish appeared to put Arbroath on their way to victory on 56 minutes.

But two headers in a three-minute spell by Donnelly levelled the match, Derek Holmes and Sean Lynch providing the crosses. And neither side could find a winner in the final 19 minutes.

Scottish Cup Round 3

Keith 0 Arbroath 1

Manager, Paul Sheerin who came on as a second half substitution, scored from the penalty spot in the last minute of the match to take the Lichties through to the next round of the Cup.

The Arbroath side found the home keeper in tremendous form as he thwarted every effort they made until Dorris was brought down for the last minute penalty which resulted in him going off injured and the manager standing up to take responsibility from the spot.

Hill had kept the visitors in the match with a great one handed save in the first half and saw the ball rebound of his post in the second but it was the home stopper who deserved the man of the match.

Stirling Albion 0-1 Arbroath

PStuart Malcolm's last-gasp header kept Arbroath hot on the heels of league leaders Cowdenbeath with a win at Stirling.

The hosts started strongly but Arbroath's Steven Doris had the first real chance to open the scoring, dragging his strike wide from six yards.

In a frantic first half-hour, Stirling's Darren Smith and Scott Davieson both tried their luck from long range, the latter having his effort well saved by Darren Hill.

Josh Falkingham had a similar chance to Doris' in the second half, with a similar result as he missed the target with a scuffed shot.

Arbroath then pushed forward to grab the three points and with a minute remaining they got their reward when Doris' cross found Malcolm, who stooped low to nod past Callum Reidford.

But Doris had another chance to score six minutes from time after Stenny goalkeeper Chris McCluskey was adjudged to have fouled the striker.

Albion Rovers 1-0 Arbroath

John Gemmell's first goal of the season gave bottom-placed Albion Rovers a victory over Arbroath.

Gemmell broke the deadlock in the 13th minute when he latched on to Christopher Boyle's through ball before drilling a low right-footed effort past Arbroath goalkeeper Darren Hill from 12 yards out.

Hill then tipped Anthony Stevenson's 25-yard driven effort round the post in the 26th minute.

Two minutes into the second half Hill was again on hand to deny Gemmell his second goal of the game with a great save from the striker's volley.

Arbroath's best opportunity to equalise fell to Gavin Swankie but he saw his 58th-minute volley fantastically saved by Derek Gaston.
